AMPGS is a natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) generation facility under development in Meigs County, Ohio. NGCC is an advanced power generation technology which allows improved fuel efficiency of natural gas. A gas turbine generator generates electricity and the waste heat is used to make steam to generate additional electricity via a steam turbine.

While originally proposed as a state-of-the-art coal generation facility, the project was cancelled as a coal-fired facility in November 2009 due to significant and unanticipated construction cost increases. AMP investigated the possible conversion of the project to an NGCC facility. AMP staff and consultants also investigated the potential to purchase an existing facility or partner in a project already under construction. In August 2010, AMP announced that based on investigations, we are moving forward with a 600 megawatt NGCC project in Meigs county, dependent upon the successful final negotiation of appropriate tax abatements, economic and infrastructure incentives, construction contracts and pricing, as well as a successful effort by AMP to subscribe the project to its member municipal electric systems.
